Friday 4th June -Marsh Fritillary Workshop
Our marsh fritillary workshop will take place on Friday 4th June, 10.30am at WWT’s Cloatley Meadows nature reserve in Hankerton.
The workshop is aimed at local landowners, large and small, who are interested to know more about the habitat requirements of the marsh fritillary butterfly. We will look at examples of good and poorer quality habitat and talk about suitable management for this species. There’s no obligation to sign up to changes on your own land, but our hope is that you might be inspired to join our mission to re-establish this charismatic butterfly in the Braydon Forest! I also promise cake!
The session should last 1-2 hours. If the weather’s good, you’re welcome to join us afterwards at Echo Lodge nature reserve on Wood Lane to look for flying adult fritillaries. It takes about 15-20 minutes to drive between the two sites.
Dr Susan Clarke, an expert in the marsh fritillary, will be leading the workshop. Following on from this, Sue will be offering a small number of free advisory visits, during which she will assess the condition of your field(s) for marsh fritillary and give a short report on suggested management.
We will also be hosting a second workshop later in the year to look at winter sward condition, as that is an often overlooked part of the butterfly’s habitat requirements. So more cake on offer J
Many thanks and best wishes,
